ADULT LEARNING

Girl Scout Adult Learning Opportunities give you the skills you need to ensure that girls can have the ultimate Girl Scout Leadership Experience.

Steps for New Volunteers

After completing the interest form on our website a volunteer or staff member from your area will contact you to schedule an interview. During this time you will complete a Self Assessment and the Volunteer Application Form. The volunteer will review training requirements with you and help you sign up for the right courses for your role as a Girl Scout Volunteer. You can also ask questions about additional training opportunities during this time. It is best to have this interview before attending a training course, as you will receive resources during this time that you will need to bring to course with you.

After your application form is processed you will be notified by Girl Scouts of Gateway Council. The next step in continuing the process as a new volunteer will be for you to take an online course. Follow the link to complete the Girl Scouts of the USA Basic Orientation. If you are unable to complete this course on line, contact your nearest service center for assistance.

Selecting Courses

After completing Orientation, you are ready to attend training in your specific volunteer role. The Adult Learning Opportunity book is produced twice a year and includes descriptions of all available courses. If your volunteer role is going to be to leader in a troop, new troop leaders should attend both the Leadership Essentials and the Troop Pathway courses. These two required courses total about 6 hours of training time. In an effort to be respectful of your time, we have tried to create the courses to get the most information out to new leaders in the shortest amount of time. Please note: It is necessary to attend both sessions to be appointed to a leadership position. Additional courses like first aid and camp training add to your ability to provide a well-rounded program. We recommend you involve troop committee parents as well as other leaders within your troop to also attend additional course that will benefit your troop.

Arrive On Time

Out of respect for the trainer and the other course participants, please try to arrive a few minutes early. Turn cell phones off and bring the items listed with the course description. Childcare is not provided during training courses. If minimum class numbers are not reached you may be contact to ask if you can re-schedule to another training opportunity. We realize your time is valuable and we want to make your training experience a positive one.

Payment

Most courses offered in the Adult Learning Opportunity Book are free of charge; however a few courses do have fees. If fees are applicable for your course payment must accompany registration.

Deadlines

Deadline dates are listed with individual courses. These dates reflect the time needed to make sure the supplies and material are available for all participants. Courses such as First Aid will accept registration after the deadline date if the maximum has not been met. There is a $5.00 late fee for registration received after the deadline date.

Cancellation Policy

Please contact the Jacksonville Service Center to cancel if you are unable to attend training. The Registrar accepts cancellations in writing until the last day of registration. For those courses that required a fee, refund will be made if cancellation request is received in writing, before the last day of registration. Cancellations made after the last registration date are not eligible for a refund.

Refunds

Full refunds are made up to and including the last day of registration except where a non-refundable fee is specified. Credit vouchers will be given for amounts under $10.00 and the vouchers may be used to register for future events or towards purchases in the council shop.
